A new white Waxy Corn hybrid was showcased by Allied Botanical Corporation during its field day in Tayug, Pangasinan, marking its 30th anniversary. That was on February 12-13, 2014.
The new hybrid, called Max One F1, produces big ears with excellent husk cover and are filled with kernels up to the tip. A dual purpose type, it can be used for processing as well as for the fresh market. The ears are also uniform with good keeping and eating quality. The plants are also very sturdy. This variety’s waxy consistency is what many consumers are looking for these days.
Farmers are also increasingly becoming interested in growing this type of corn. Some people claim they prefer to eat waxy corn over sweet corn.
Waxy corn for boiling can be harvested in 70 to 75 days from planting. The green stover can be fed to cattle and other farm animals. Additional information can be had from Cris Alibuyog, assistant vice president of Allied Botanical for Product Development and Technology Support, at 0932-855-1661.
