The lady governor related that the farmers had earlier complained about the poor quality of seedpieces that the Department of Agriculture was distributing to the Ilocano farmers, particularly in Ilocos Norte. What they did was to look for quality planting materials in collaboration with the experts of the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) in Batac City.
The result is bumper garlic crops enjoyed by the local garlic farmers. At the time of our visit (March 1, 2015), the going price in the market was P120 per kilo. It’s cheaper than what it used to be probably because of the big harvest. Even then, at that price, the farmers are still making money.
