ON MAY 22, 2020 my nephew harvested from our Golden Queen tree what is so far the biggest fruit we have harvested in our farm at about 1.5 kilos. Actually there are three fruits harvested of almost the same size. Previously, the biggest we got was about 1.3 kilos a fruit. We are now trying to speculate what could be the reason for the big fruits.
SPECULATION – What could be the reason for the big fruits? Could it be the HumikD we sprayed before flowering? Or the Z-Fert fertilizer with several trace elements that we applied in the ground? Or the Megafol, a biostimulant that was sprayed after HumikD? We are not sure. All the three could have contributed to the production of the big fruits.
UNTOLD STORY – In 1995, Toto Barcelona of Harbest Agrbusiness and I went to Taiwan to visit successful honeydew melon farmers. Along the way we saw a big banner proclaiming that Golden Queen mango was a sensation among tourists. Toto looked for the source of planting materials and bought 20 scions at a high price.
GRAFTED IN BATAAN – The scions were grafted by our friend Eulogio Mallari of Dinalupihan, Bataan. There were 18 successful grafts, two of which were retained by Mallari. Toto also got two and the rest were left with me. We soon multiplied the new variety as fast as we could and a lot of people have enjoyed seeing their trees bear big fruits and enjoying eating the same.
IN DEMAND UP TO NOW – Planting materials are in demand up to now although not in big volumes. Grafted seedlings 3-4 feet tall sell at P350 at the Sarian Farm in Teresa, Rizal. For more info, contact Rose at 0915-002-1368; 0906-551-1791 or 0947-590-0398 (smart)
