A three-day Cacao Summit will be held on May 27-29, 2016 at the Sky Hall of SM Seaside, Cebu City. The event is under the auspices of Plantacion de Sikwate (PDS) with the support of the Cebu provincial government, Department of Trade and Industry Region 7, and some other government agencies.

The aim of the summit, according to Christopher L. Fadriga, PDS national president, is to position the cacao product in the world market as organic by natural farmers. The event will cover the important details of cacao farming and at once launch the organization that will help ensure the sustainability of cacao supply in theglobal arena.

Fadriga says that the Philippines is ideal for cacao farming. Ten degrees below and above the equator, our country is considered an optimal area for the production of the high-grade cacao bean. There is good proof that cacao grows well under local conditions. Although cacao production is currently focused in Davao, producing cacao in just one area is not enough, according to Fadriga.

He said we need to expand to other areas and share the abundant blessing with more farmers all over the country. Now is the time to broaden the areas planted to cacao as the worldwide supply heavily decreases as a result of the cessation of child labor in the plantations of other countries. The shortage looms large ahead of us, and we must take the opportunity to act now, he stressed.
