CARLOS SAPLALA at the Agrilink trade show, October 4, 2018.
SeedWorks Philippines president Carlos Saplala at the Agriink trade show.
Time flies really fast, us usually not realizing it. Just like the case of a kid that we first came to know some 30 years or so ago.
The boy we knew as a small kid was named Carlos, the son of a long-time friend, the late Dr. Vic Saplala who was an orchid breeder and who was an active player in the horticulture industry.
At the recent Agrilink trade show at the World Trade Center in Pasay City, we met Carlos on opening day. He was manning his own booth at the trade expo. He is now president of his own company, SeedWorks Philippines, which is into the distribution of high-value seeds.
Earlier, we wrote a story about practically all the vegetable farmers in Gerona, Tarlac planting a special eggplant hybrid with exceptional traits. This was the Prolifica variety which is up to now highly in demand by farmers. The variety is high-yielding and is resistant to pests and diseases. On top of that, the fruits have excellent eating quality and long shelf life.

Prolifica was introduced by SeedWorks about five years ago and is still in much demand. Unfortunately, seeds are not always available. That’s because whenever it is available, it is immediately sold out. At any rate, when we asked Carlos if it is available at this time (October 4, 2018), he said that some are still available.
Aside from eggplant seeds, SeedWorks also distributes other outstanding vegetable varieties. One cucumber that performs well under high elevation is a dark green variety. The color of the fruit remains dark green even when grown in the lowland. Other varieties with dark green fruits under upland conditions bear fruits that have white streaks when grown in the lowland. Tomato, ampalaya, sweet corn are other high-value crops that SeedWorks distributes today.
US-88 hybrid rice produces long panicles. The the long grains are shiny and soft when cooked.
US-88 is highly suitable for milling into brown rice because it is soft when cooked.
HYBRID RICE – Carlos is also very proud of the two hybrid varieties that his company is carrying. One is US-88 from US Agriseeds which, aside from producing high yield, the long shiny grains are soft when cooked. It Is therefore highly suitable for milling into brown rice. Brown rice is healthier to eat than well milled rice and a higher milling recovery is obtained compared to when the grains are well milled as white rice.
The other hybrid is TH-82, also known as Tatag Hybrid. It is claimed to be tolerant to bacterial leaf blight, to intermittent drought and waterlogging. It produces strong tillers, non-lodging and non-shattering grains. It is recommended for wet and dry seasons, applicable for direct and dry seeding culture. The shiny white trains have high head rice recovery.
Well, we are really glad that the generations after us, like Carlos Saplala, are doing great!
