Opportunities in backyard Darag chicken production will be discussed by Dr. Synan S. Baguio who headed a successful project on the improvement of the native chicken in Panay. Dr. Baguio is a scientist of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) of the Department of Science and Technology.
The agribusiness opportunities can be in the production of chicks for sale to interested growers. The chicks of the native chicken that are hatched in incubators or by the hen itself command a higher price than chicks of the white breeds for egg and meat. There is a big demand for Darag chicks, particularly in Panay Island where the chicken is produced for cooking as inasal.
Another opportunity is the production of native chickens for meat. One retaurant, Tatoy’s in Iloilo, requires no less than 600 birds in one day so that the restaurant has to import native chicken from as far as Guimaras, Capiz and Antique.
Then there is the opportunity for producing native eggs for the local market. Although smaller than the eggs of the leghorn type, native chicken eggs are in demand, especially if the birds are considered organically raised.
