ONE OF THE FARM ANIMALS that caught our attention at the recent Agrilink trade show at the World Trade Center was a couple of sheep with coat that is totally dark brown. We were wondering if that was a new breed which we had not encountered before.
It turns out the dark brown sheep with good body conformation are crosses of Barbados Blackbelly, a hair sheep, and Dorper, a pure white animal with big body and is the wool type. Apparently, Barbados Blackbelly is dominant in terms of color. Dorper apparently, on the other hand, improved the body size of the cross. The first crosses are just one year old, and Dr. Ricky Songco, the owner, hopes that the promising initial result will be sustained.
By the way, Dr. Songco of Guagua, Pampanga, is a dentist who has totally given up pulling teeth in favor of raising sheep, goats, pigs and tilapia.
