Dr. Fernando C. Sanchez Jr. was named new Chancellor of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) during investiture rites officiated by UP President Alfredo E. Pascual at the university’s D.L. Umali Hall. In his acceptance speech Chancellor Sanchez stressed that UPLB will endeavor to produce globally competitive students, and also mold them to have humanist souls and entrepreneurial spirits that they might become instruments in promoting inclusive growth. On his part, UP President Pascual reiterated the support that the UP System will give in order for UPLB to realize its vision. Chancellor Sanchez’s investiture coincided with the 106th founding anniversary of UPLB, which was established as the UP College of Agriculture (UPCA) in 1909. Renamed and reorganized as UPLB in 1972, it is home to nine centers of excellence as declared by the Commission on Higher Education. UPLB also has six centers of excellence in research by virtue of Republic Proclamations. Its academic units in biological, physical, and social sciences have initiated collaborative and integrative efforts in finding solutions to issues in climate change adaptation, food security and rural development, among others.
