WHILE going over our photo file from India, we came across the trials made by the Jain Group on drip irrigation of rice. This could be done in the Philippines during this period of El Niño. Very expensive and impractical, you will most likely say.
But here is a possibility. There is now this cheap home-grown irrigation technology developed by Greg delos Trinos, lately assisted by the Bureau of Agricultural Research.
Where it is possible, let’s plant the high-value colored rice varieties and have them drip-irrigated. These include the black, red and other colors that command as much as P80 per kilo in the retail market that includes weekend markets. Some colored rice varieties are also high-yielding so that the project could be profitable.
Maybe, someone should try this.
