FARM TIP: Don’t Overcrowd Your Pigs

Make your pigs comfortable. Don’t overcrowd them. That is the advice of Gil SP Garcia of Agrichexers, a feed company. He is also the chairman of Kooperatibang Pangkabuhayan ng Sta. Maria (Bulacan).
His co-op has contract growers who are given weanlings to raise plus all the feeds and technical assistance.
Overcrowding can result in mortality. If not, the pigs will grow slower. He says that some of their contract growers who put more pigs in their pens than is recommended have incurred deaths. One death means a big loss already, he said.
Here’s Gil’s recommendation. Give your pig 1 to 1.5 square meters during the rainy months. In summer, give your pigs 1.5 to 2 square meters each. They will grow faster and their meat will be of better quality.
