Farmer makes P118,920 profit from half hectare sweet corn!

Carmelo Prado’s Sweet Fortune produces mosly First Class ears.

DURING a sweet corn field day in 2018 in Sariaya, Quezon, Carmelo Prado, 52, was upbeat in telling about his good fortune in planting sweet corn on half hectare of his property. He was very happy because he made a profit of P118,920 from that small piece of land.

3 KG SEEDS – In February 2018, he planted three kilos of the Sweet Fortune variety that he bought for P5,550. Seventy five days later, he harvested his crop and was pleasantly surprised because most of the ears were first class.

MOSTLY FIRST CLASS EARS – Carmelo harvested 12,130 Class A ears which he sold for P9 apiece or a total of P109,170; 3,000 Class B ears which he sold for P7 apiece or P21,000; and 1,950 Class C ears which he sold for P5 each or P9,750. Thatโ€™s a total of P139,920. Oh yes, the hybrid produced a high percentage of high class ears.

TOTAL PRODUCTION COST – And how much did he spend to produce his Sweet Fortune? He spent only P21,000 so that he made a profit of P118,920 in a growing period of 75 days. The cost consisted of the seeds, land preparation, fertilizer, crop protection inputs, irrigation and labor.

ALL-SEASON VARIETY – Sweet Fortune was introduced a few years back by Rambo Seeds. It is claimed to be suitable for planting in both the wet and dry seasons, unlike many of its other counterparts which are suited only for the dry months.
