This is a variegated chico at the Sarian Farm in Teresa, Rizal. The fruits are bagged to protect them from fruitfly infestation.

FRUITFLIES infest a lot of fruits making them not fit for eating. You are familiar with fruits of chico, guava, balimbing and many others that are thrown away because of the “worms” inside. Actually, those worms are the larvae of the fruitflies which deposit their eggs in the developing fruits.

Of course, people don’t want to spray chemical pesticides on the fruits because that will endanger the health of the consumer. The solution is to bag the fruits starting when they are still small. At the Sarian Farm in Teresa, Rizal, we use cloth bags to protect our fruits from the pest.Paper bags fashioned out of newspaper can also be used.
