A new foliar fertilizer is being tried extensively in farmers’ fields and demo farms throughout the country, especially on rice and corn. This is the GRO Plant Booster, a brand of an American company that is being formulated in the Philippines for the Philippine and Asian markets by the Texicon Group of Companies.

This foliar fertilizer has been approved by the Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority (FPA) for commercial release to the public. According to FPA, “GRO Plant Booster is a multi-crop, all-natural crop-enhancing product which contains macro and micronutrients, enzymes and amino acids, which when applied at specific stages of plant development acts to increase plant growth and yields.”

The fertilizer can be sprayed on the leaves of young rice plants (14-21 days after transplanting) or the roots of seedlings before transplanting are immersed in a solution of GRO and water. The fertilizer can be applied to both transplanted and direct-seeded rice.

According to Dr. Leodegario A. Ebron, product and registration manager, GRO makes the roots longer, hence the plant is more drought-resistant and also able to take up more nutrients from the soil. The tillers become more stocky, resulting in more sturdy stems that resist lodging better. The panicles are fully exserted and the grains are fully filled. This results in heavier grains of better quality, hence increased yield. Also, fertilizer usually applied to the soil is reduced, hence the farmer incurs less expense on fertilizers. Another observation is that rice plants treated with GRO matures earlier, hence shorter exposure to stresses like drought or inclement weather.

Farmers who have tried GRO report significant increases in their harvests of rice. For instance, Henry Bacay of Oriental Mindoro reported that his harvest increased from 130 to 197 cavans per hectare with the application of GRO. Another farmer, Lena Manebo also from Oriental Mindoro, reported that her yield increased from 113 to 174 cavans per hectare with GRO.

GRO Plant Booster is also being extensively tried ย on corn and other crops in demo farms and farmers’ fields in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Carlo J. Carpio, VP-Sales and Marketing, and Dr. Ebron are working in tandem in conducting further trials of the new fertilizer. Dr. Ebron can be contacted at 0917-817-1903 while Carlo J. Carpio can be reached at 0917-525-8911.
