WHY DO FARMERS love to plant Prolifica eggplant? Because it is so profitable even if the farmgate price is only P10 per kilo. That’s what the husband and wife tandem of Ronald and Mariflor Calong will tell you. That’s what Mariflor told us wen we met her at the Agribiz Kapihan on October 13, 2018. The two are vegetable farmers in Cabatuan, Isabela.
7,500 KILOS PER HARVEST – In the season before we met, Mariflor said they harvested from their 1.5-hectare Prolifica plantation 7,500 kilos of fruits every four to five for a period of five months. Even if the garmgate price was only P10 per kilo, that amounted to P75,000 worth per harvest. That’s about half a million pesos per month!
7-HECTARE FARM – The Calongs are enterprising vegetable farmers who plant different varieties in their 7-hectare property throughout the year. They were at the Agribiz Kapihan at the Harbest Agribusiness Taytay office because they were getting a brand new power tiller which they will use in land preparation. Three harvests of Prolifica was more than enough to pay for the power tiller which was worth P190,000/
REALLY PROLIFIC – This variety is really a big money-maker. Mariflor said that in the last season, they harvested from their 1.5-hectare Prolifica plantation 7,500 kilos of fruits every 4-5 days for a period of five months. Even if the farmgate price was only P10 per kilo, that amounted to P75,000 per harvest.
AT AGRIBIZ KAPIHAN – We met the Calong couple at the Agribiz Kapihan at the Harbsst Building at the Rizal Techno Park in Taytay, Rizal on October 13, 2018. They had just bought a power tiller worth P190,000 from Harbest that they will use in cultivating their 7-hectare vegetable farm. Three harvests of Prolifica were more than enough to pay for the power tiller!
MOST IN DEMAND – Prolifica is the most sought-after variety of eggplant today for a number of good reasons. Aside from being prolific, it is not susceptible to the usual pests and diseases that attack other varieties. The eating quality is superior and has a longer shelf life, too.
HYBRID RICE, TOO – Prolifica is distributed in the country by SeedWorks PH headed by Carlos Saplala. The company also distributes high-yielding hybrid rice varieties like US-88 which has yielded bumper crops in a recent competition called Hari sa Ani conducted in Luzon and the Davao region.
