How Benguet Potato Growers Can Increase Harvest Four Times

Granola is the standard potato variety that many growers in Benguet have been planting for so many years for the fresh market. And they have been planting seed pieces they select from their own harvests year after year. It is said that the farmers are planting seed pieces as old as the 15th generation. Somehow, the yield decreases and the quality deteriorates as they continue to plant tubers from their own harvests.

Technical experts of Allied Botanical Corporation report that a kilo of 15th generation seed pieces usually produces only five kilos, and many of the tubers are small. On the other hand, newly imported seed pieces from Holland have been observed to produce bigger and more uniform tubers. One kilo of the so-called Zero Generation seed pieces (newly imported) yields as much as 20 kilos. Many of the tubers weigh 250 grams or 4 pieces to a kilo. On the other hand, a kilo of tubers of old generation seed pieces usually produces 5 to 7 kilos and the tubers weigh an average of 100 grams or 10 pieces to a kilo.

One plant of Zero Generation seed pieces usually yields 15 to 20 tubers averaging 5 to 6 tubers per kilo. On the other hand, one old generation plant usually yields less than 10 tubers with an average weight of 100 grams.

The Allied Botanical experts also say that high yields can be obtained up to the third generation. This means that the farmers can plant seed pieces from their own harvest of the second and third generations. They should replace their planting materials with new import after the third generation.
