IF YOU are looking for a money-maker with a short gestation period, consider the Paniyur variety of black pepper from India. This has long fruit spikes that are very pungent. The fruit spikes are double the length of the ordinary variety grown in the Philippines.

You can plant black pepper, allowing the vine to climb your mahogany trees if you have some. The plant will usually start bearing fruit in just 1.5 years. A lady from Batangas who has planted the same using kakawate as support is now harvesting a lot of fruits. The planting materials were obtained from the Sarian Farm about ten years ago.

What’s good about black pepper is that it can be stored for a long time. The harvest is not heavy so it is very easy to transport even if the farm is located away from the town or city.

In Thailand, growers harvest their black pepper even when they are not mature. The fully developed fruits are harvested green and sold in the market. We have tried using the green berries for cooking adobo. The result is very satisfactory. We can eat the pepper corn with the chicken adobo.
