THE PANIYUR black pepper from India is one plant that you should grow in your home garden or farm for a number of good reasons.

REASONS – Paniyur is high-yielding. It produces double the yield of the old variety because it has long fruit spikes, usually 4 inches compared to 2 inches of the old one. One plant or two in the home garden can produce the requirements of a typical family. In remote plantations, the harvest is very light so it is easy to transport. In addition, the dried peppercorn can be stored for long periods.

EASY TO GROW – Unlike other crops, black pepper does not need daily attention. Once established, it can grow without much care. Watering may be necessary only during the summer months. But then watering might just be once a week or thereabouts. We have successfully grown our Paniyur using our mahogany trees as plant support. The size of the trunk does not matter much. The tree may have a trunk with a diameter of 6 inches, or it could be a much bigger tree. We have also seen Paniyur growing very well using young kakawate trees as plant support.

HOW TO PLANT – We recommend putting three rooted cuttings side by side at the base of the support tree. You don’t have to bury the rooted cuttings. Just put them on the ground and then dump over the base a pail of a mixture of garden soil and old manure or vermicast. See to it that the soil will not erode. When the vines are tall enough, you can tie them to the trunk so they will attach themselves.

IDEAL HEIGHT – Don’t allow the vines to grow too high on the tree. For easy harvesting, limit the growth to about eight feet. Prune the growth above eight feet. You may root the cuttings for additional planting materials.

FERTILIZING – Black pepper will respond to fertilization. Every three months you can  apply half a kilo of old manure to the base of the plants. You can also spray plant growth accelerators every month. These may be Power Grower Combo, Durabloom organic liquid,  Megafol and others.
