EMMANUEL ‘Manny’ Bartocillo is very happy these days because he is selling his mango harvest at P52 per kilo. That’s about 10 times what he and other mango growers in Southern Mindanao used to get in previous years when their harvest coincided with the peak season in Luzon, particularly Pangasinan, Ilocos Norte and Central Luzon.
Bartocillo is the president of the mango growers association in Region 12 which consists of South Cotabato, North Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Sarangani provinces plus the two cities of Cotabato and General Santos.
To help improve the production and income of his fellow mango growers, he organized sometime back the Mango Industry Development Council (MIDC) in Region 12. He formed the planters into clusters to make more convenient the transfer of improved technologies in mango growing, value-adding, marketing and entrepreneurship.
