Organic rice farmers in Miagao, Iloilo, will be able to boost their production and marketing of brown rice as they recently received one unit or rice paddy huller from the Department of Agriculture (DA) Western Visayas through the Organic Agriculture (OA) program.
The brown rice mill worth P700,000 which was installed in Brgy. Kirayan Tacas has a milling capacity of 470.5 kilos per hour with a brown rice miling recovery of 70.2 percent.
Fe Rem Niñofranco, president of the Miagao Organic Black Producers’ Association (MOBRA) said that the local government unit donated the lot and funded the P200,000 construction of the shed for the facility. She also commended the support of 42 members of MOBRA who came from different barangays of Miagao.
“With the different projects we received from DA, our association will continue to intensify our organic farming practices and to expand our areas converted to organic,” she added.
DA Regional Technical Director for Operations Manuel O. Olanday encouraged the MOBRA members to maintain the good condition of the rice mill so it will help them in the marketing of their rice, particularly brown rice which Is considered healty rice.
The turnover ceremony held on January 18 was also graced by OA program focal person Glenda Himatay, Iloilo assistant provincial agriculturist Elias Sandig and Yvonne Grace Sur of the DA Engineering Division.
