Farmers from Nueva Ecija, Pangasinan and Mindoro are excited about the high yields they got from a new onion variety from Holland, the Red Dragon that is being distributed by Ramgo Seeds. They planted the new variety commercially during the last two cropping seasons and are impressed by its performance.

Romeo “Bilog” Beronilla, an onion grower for 36 years and buyer for 12 years, first planted Red Dragon in 2015. He had planted the variety early in the cropping season, during the usual planting period, and late planting. In all instances, the variety performed very well. He reported that four sachets of seeds costing about P2,000 yielded 100 bags of 20 to 25 kilos each. That’s 2 to 2.5 tons worth P40,000 to P50,000 at the usual price of P20 per kilo at harvest time; P50,000 to P62,500 if the ex-farm price is P25 per kilo. There are times, however, when the harvest is as early as in January, and the price could be as high as P100 per kilo. In which case, the profit could be really high.

In Occidental Mindoro, Reynaldo Quilit who has been planting onion for 21 years is impressed by the early maturity and disease resistance of Red Dragon. As early as one month from seeding, the seedlings are already ready for field planting so that you harvest ahead of growers of other varieties. The plants are robust and are resistant to diseases. He had harvested 100 bags per 4 sachets of seeds that he planted. He considers that a high yield.
