NEW SWEET PEARL: Waxy Corn With 40% Sweetness

Gabrielle Parungao, East-West senior plant breeder.

Watch for the commercial release of a new Sweet Pearl waxy corn with 40% sweetness. This is a new product of East-West Seed. The old Sweet Pearl which is now a favorite of farmers and consumers, only has 20% sweetness. It has been enhanced and now has 40% sweetness. Two sources of sweet genes were involved in the enhancement.

For release in 2018 is Sweet Supreme, a yellow sweet corn that is claimed to be suitable for planting in both the wet and dry seasons. It has big ears, usually three pieces to a kilo, according to Glenn Gregorio whom we met at the Hortanova Farm in Lipa City recently. One lady plant breeder who worked on the new sweet corn varieties is Gabrielle Parungao. Another new sweet corn is Rainy Sweet which usually has double ears.

      1. What I mean is, how much do bulk buyers get CLass A (primera), Class B (segunda) from the farmers? I have 1 hectare of sweet pearl planted and about to be harvested in 7 days. I have no idea how much is the selling price around this time. Many thanks.
