RADICCHIO:Looks Like Red Cabbage But It’s Not; Much More Expensive Than Red Cabbage


The Radicchio caught our attention at the Agri Show in KIaohsiung, Taiwan, Nov. 22-23, 2018.


At the Agri Trade Fair in Kaohsiung City in Taiwan, we saw what we thought was a very attractive red cabbage. Turns out it is not red cabbage. It is simply called Radicchio, a member of the chicory family. We were particularly attracted by the prominent white streaks of the vegetable.

In the US, while the red cabbage sells for less than a dollar a pound, Radicchio sells for $3 – $6 a pound.

While the red cabbage has the same flavor and texture of the green cabbage, Radicchio has a bold bitter flavor. To quote Food Blogga, Radicchio is wonderful raw in salads, grilled and used as pizza topping or sauteed and tossed with pasta. Because of its bitterness, Radicchio pairs best with sweet, salty and acidic ingredients such as oranges, prosciutto and balsam vinegar.
