FARMERS in the North, particularly Cagayan Valley and in Ifugao and Kalinga, are seriously getting into rubber production. Planting materials are being imported in big numbers from Mindanao, particularly from Dr. Pablito P. Pamplona of Triple P Farms and Nursery in Kabacan, North Cotabato. He recently delivered part of an order for 30,000 grafted planting materials to Charles Lim of Santiago City in Isabela.
Earlier, Dr. Pamplona delivered 10,000 grafted planting materials to Mayor Glenn Prudenciano of Alfonso Lista in Ifugao. We gathered from Jess Domingo of the same town that the good mayor already has tappable rubber trees. And he is expanding.
Dr. William Medrano of the Isabela State University revealed that a congressman from the Cordillera Administrative Region already has a big plantation. In Cagayan, Gov. Alvaro Antonio is said to be targeting a plantation of 100 hectares.
In the meantime, Dr. Medrano revealed that many of the trees planted earlier are inferior varieties with low yield. However, they are not eliminating them. They are going to harvest the fruits and use them as rootstock for grafting the superior varieties.
Dr. Medrano said that the Cagayan Valley Rubber Planters Association headed by Charles Lim will put up their own nursery to accelerate the production of superior planting materials.
Meanwhile, Dr. Medrano said they will be convening the 2nd Regional Rubber Forum sometime in March to update the farmers about the latest developments in the rubber industry. The forum also aims to encourage more farmers to get into rubber farming.
