A lady professional, Luzviminda Tancangco, who was once a commissioner of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) put up her own organic farm and an organic restaurant in Bustos, Bulacan for a very good personal reason. And that is, in her own words, “to keep her sanity.” She had hinted of a lot of corruption in the government service.

In her Daily Bread Organic Farm in Brgy. Bonga Memor, she has put up facilities for relaxation, team building activities, and growing areas for vegetables, native pigs and other small animals like chickens and rabbits. She has become an advocate of healthy living which means organically grown foods.

The irony of it, she says, is that after putting up all the facilities, the tax man was swift in assessing the property although it is not yet making money. Before, she used to pay P6,000 in taxes a year for the property. Suddenly, the tax has increased to P51,000 a year.

She explained that while the farm is not yet making money, she has put up an organic restaurant along the highway to cater to health-conscious customers. The income from the restaurant, she said, is used to finance further development of the organic farm.

Miss Tancangco has developed a network of suppliers of organically grown farm produce that include mushrooms, various vegetables, turmeric powder, coffee from Sagada, honey from the wild, coco sugar, rice, organic wines and many others. She has become a consolidator of various organic products so that she is helping small farmers increase their incomes. The Dumagats, for instance, are making money from the turmeric that they supply to the organic restaurant and store.

In pursuing her advocacy for healthy living, Miss Tancangco is at peace and happy with her sanity intact.
