The Villar SIPAG Urban Farm School will be inaugurated on September 15, 2015 in Brgy. San Nicolas-1, Bacoor, Cavite. This is within the leisure farm that Sen. Cynthia Villar has started to develop. Sen. Villar, chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food, must have been inspired to put up her own leisure farm after visiting several such farms in Taiwan last June.
The inauguration will also coincide with the launch of the Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan Farmers Training Program that is being undertaken in collaboration with SM Foundation. This urban farming training which is facilitated by Harbest Agribusiness will last for 12 weekly sessions. The participants will learn the basics of growing crops in the urban setting by listening to lectures as well as participating in hands-on gardening work from land preparation, seedling production up to harvesting, postharvest handling and marketing.
At the end of the 12th session, most of the plants grown by the participants will be ready for harvesting and a harvest festival will be held. Words of wisdom will be delivered by the sponsors of the training course as well as by invited experts.
SM Foundation, in collaboration with Harbest Agribusiness, has been undertaking similar vegetable production training programs in various places in the country.
