TWO BROTHERS who are successful farmers from Alcala, Pangasinan paid tribute to their mom on the occasion of Mother’s Day in May 2019. The brothers are Gabby and Henry Laguardia who profusely thanked their mother Tessie for inculcating in them the importance of hard work, love for farming and the right values.
Gabby, 38, is one of the Farmer Heroes of East-West Seed in recognition of his success as an agribusiness entrepreneur. He finished a course in Criminology but decided to be on his own as a farmer-businessman instead of looking for employment in the government or in the private sector. Gabby operates an agricultural supplies store, the GCS Seedlings and General Merchandise in Brgy. San Pedro Ili.
His older brother Henry, 45, is an accountant. Like Gabby, he opted to become a full-time farmer and he has proven that he made the right choice. He now operates his own farm of 10 hectares where he grows various vegetables, including ampalaya, tomato, upo, sitao, peppers, onion and more. Last year, he planted grafted ampalaya on two hectares and got a jackpot because he harvested 120 tons from the two hectares which he sold at P80 per kilo. It happened that a typhoon destroyed the ampalaya crops in other growing areas so the supply was low. He grossed P4.8 million from that particular crop of grafted ampalaya in 2018.
Henry buys his planting materials from the Farm Ready of East-West Seed. He and his family employ around 20 families to work in the field.
Mrs. Tessie Laguardia is the mother of 10. The eight other children are also well on their own, including a civil engineer, a teacher, pharmacist and others.
