An agri-entrepreneur in Alitagtag, Batangas has found that a new foliar fertilizer can produce high yield and profit in tomato despite the low farmgate price due to oversupply of the vegetable during the harvest season.

Anthony Cortes of Corville Inc. reported that Mike Justiniani who used Supravim, a foliar fertilizer from the US, was able to produce an average of 53 tons per hectare which is 18 tons more than the 35 tons that Justiniani used to harvest per hectare from his previous tomato crops.

Despite the low price during the harvest season (P8 per kilo), Justiniani was able to make an additional profit of P144,000 per hectare.

Cortes who distributes Supravim locally says that the new fertilizer provides several benefits to the plants. First, it enables the plants to develop a massive root system so that they can take up more nutrients from the soil. In effect, it also makes the plants more resistant to drought. And that is one reason why Justiniani was able to prolong the harvesting period to two months instead of the usual one month.

The application of Supravin, according to Cortes, reduces flower drop and promotes high fruit set. It also promotes more branching leading to more fruiting points per plant. Justiniani also saved on cost of pesticides because Cortes claims that the foliar fertilizer reduces insect infestation.

Actually, Justiniani did not alter his usual practice in fertilizing his tomato plants with inorganic fertilizers. What he simply did was to spray 10 liters of Supravim per hectare worth P8,800. And that gave him an additional profit of P144,000 per hectare despite the low price during harvest time from the latter half of March this year to the middle of May.

Justinini planted three hectares to Diamante Max variety from East-West Seed on January 12, 2016 and started harvesting on March 16. The foliar fertilizer was applied four times. The first spraying was 15 days after transplanting and repeated three times every 15 days. One liter of Supravim is mixed in water in a 200-liter drum and then sprayed on the plants.
