Here’s a new improved white corn variety developed by plant breeders of the Institute of Plant Breeding of UP Los Baños. It is called UP Var6 which is an improvement over the previous recommended variety called UP Var4. The improved variety is said to have a lower glycemic index which means it is good for those who are suffering from hypertension and diabetics.

Dr. Artemio Sa;azar, IPB plant breeder, said that UP Var 6 can yield up to five tons per hectare. It can be grown in various parts in the country. Seeds are available at P80 per kilo in DA regional distributors. About 18 kilos (60,000 seeds) worth P1,440 will plant one hectare.

The new variety can be milled for human consumption. It is being used in school feeding program in Los Baños.
