We had a very enlightening talk with Dr. William Medrano on October 5, 2019 at the Agrilink trade show. Medrano is the newly designated undersecretary for livestock at the Department of Agriculture. He told us he had just come from Mindanao where he distributed Itik Pinas, the improved mallard duck (itik) developed and multiplied at the experiment station of the DA in Tiaong, Quezon.
Itik Pinas which can produce more eggs than the old Pateros Itik is just one of the technologies developed and disseminated by the Tiaong research ststion. It has also developed improved strains of the native black pig so that the animals are more uniform in size and other desirable traits.
The Tiaong Experiment Station has also developed improved strains of the Paraoakan chicken from Palawan. Many other native strains as well as imported breeds suitable for free-range production are also multiplied at the station.
Dr. Medrano said that one of the small ruminants that he will push for dissemination to small farms will be sheep which is more hardy and easier to raise than goats.
With adequate funding, Dr. Medrano would like to duplicate the Tiaong Research Station, one in Mindanao and another in the Visayas. These agencies would undertake mass production of stocks for dissemination to small farms in the provinces.
