For the first time in the history of the Kadayawan Garden Show in Davao City (whole month of August 2017), a Philippine orchid species, Vanda luzonica, was adjudged the Best Orchid in Show by the judges consisting of Vangie Go (Philippine Orchid Society president), Jaime Chua, orchid grower and landscaper from Cebu City, and Doreen Dofitas of the garden club in Bacolod City.
The winning orchid was exhibited by the Puentespina Orchid and Tropical Plants managed by Angel Puentespina. The species is now an endangered species because its native habitat, Mt. Pinatubo, has been ravaged by the explosion of the volcano.
In her talk at the awarding ceremony, Vangie Go enjoined the orchid lovers in Davao to take care and multiply their Vanda luzonica because the forests of Mr. Pinatubo are no longer there as host of the orchid.
