VERY NOVEL CONCEPT: A Far Infrared Rice Dryer
DR. MANUEL REGALADO, PhilRice Deputy Director and scientist, has a research on a very novel concept of drying palay fast with minimal loss in grain quality.

This is what he calls Far Infrared Radiation Rice Drying technology. He explains that the wavelength of the Far Infrared Ray (FIR) is similar to the wavelength of the water molecule inside the rice grain. If the grains are exposed to FIR, the grains dry faster with minimum loss in quality. When palay with 18% moisture content is exposed to FIR, it only takes two hours for the grains to dry at 13% MC.

How is the drying done? First, they made a ceramic plate using lahar. When the ceramic plate is heated using heat from a rice hull gasifier burner, it gives out FIR. The research is ongoing and if finally perfected for commercialization, it promises a very big impact on the rice industry.
