Worms Inside Eggplant In Villasis, Pangasinan

On our way back from Laoag City on December 11, 2013 to Manila, we stopped by the the farm produce ‘Bagsakan’ in Villasis, Pangasinan, to buy just a kilo of eggplant we intended to use in the pinakbet we were going to cook when we arrived home.

The eggplant fruits were very nice looking. The skin was very shiny. To our dismay, when we started slicing them for cooking, more than half have worms inside. This is the damage caused by the shoot and tip borer that has been the most serious problem of vegetable growers not only in Pangasinan but elsewhere.

Our advice is: If you are going to buy eggplant from the market in Villasis, Pangasinan, slice some in front of the seller to find out if the vegetable she or he is selling is infested.
